Do not buy upstream oil accounting software for a service contractor merely because both work in energy. The transaction model and required controls are different.
Map the property and ownership structure
The platform should identify legal entity, basin, field, lease, property, well, completion, cost center, operator, purchaser, owner, and interest where applicable. It must preserve effective dates because ownership and operating responsibility change over time.
Test working interests, revenue interests, overriding royalties, burdens, carried interests, payout arrangements, and ownership suspense. Require a review and approval process for deck changes. A retroactive ownership change should recalculate only the authorized periods and retain the original and revised results.
Control AFEs and field spending
An authorization for expenditure sets an approved scope and estimate for drilling, completion, workover, facilities, or another project. The accounting workflow should compare commitments, invoices, field tickets, payroll, allocations, and actual cost to the AFE by cost category and owner.
